Of course the first thing I do when I get home in Toronto is go to a Toronto fashion week party with all of my friends. I got home at 10:30 and was at the party by 11:15ish. We were all black and all furs – v sleek and chic.

Hey kids, your favorite black barista here. So I am the only person of color employed at my specific shop (I live in suburbia and it’s a living hell), and today we had this as our trivia question (answer is B). I didn’t pick it, although almost every white person who came in assumed I did. I thought I’d share some of the gems I heard because of it:
- Older White Man who always answers the trivia every single fucking day and has NEVER complained about the questions: Who the hell cares?? They’re all idiots anyway. I hate this question.
White Co-Worker: Couldn’t agree more!
Me: *horrified silence* - White Woman: Wow this is a tough one, I don’t think many people who come in here listen to rap music. Do I look like I listen to rap music? *laughs*
Me: Well I’m pretty sure you don’t need a certain look to listen to music, just…ears. So yeah, you do!
White Woman: Oh…sure… - 12 different White Customers throughout my shift: Did you write this question?
- White Woman #2: Why would you choose a question that only certain people would know?
Me: *almost rolls my eyes into oblivion* - College-aged white guy: Hmm… *turns to black guy waiting in line behind him whom HE DOESN’T FUCKING KNOW* You got the answer to this right? *laughs*
Black Guy: *gives me the “can u believe this fucking cracker” look*
Me: *gives him the “I know brotha just pray to the lord for strength” look*
And much more. Y’all it was fucking wild to see white people so uncomfortable with something as simple as a trivia question that even hinted at blackness. We have questions about everything from fucking astrophysics to types of cheese but it was this one that was just “too much” or “outside their knowledge.” Soooo ridiculous and childish and…welp, racist.
this is an important post
5 seconds on Google will answer this, and the white people rather moan than look it up. And assume the only other black people in the room just mystically know.
the only surprising thing about this post is that snoop dogg’s name is calvin
it’s so sad that this doesn’t even surprise me at all, but i mean suburbia is the stuff of my actual nightmares (no offense to anyone from the suburbs).

fortuitous dashboard happenings.

forward.
i just went through my photo album chronicling my last year of university while listening to taylor swift and lorde (why do i do this to myself) and it was so incredibly bitersweet (i have loved and i have lost – things are coming to an end, but everything was beautiful) but also very cathartic (i am still healing and that’s okay – the future is bright and open) and now i’m in bed thinking of what my life will look like 5 years from now.
i honestly don’t really know, but it’s going to be amazing.

typical thursday.
i wrote a midterm on whaling today and then i went to bda before heading to clark’s birthday dinner.
then we all went to gerts to meet up with some friends and have a couple of drinks.
i went home fully intending to watch foxcatcher and go to sleep, but the night had other plans for me.
pete was in town, so i went to apollon with him and james.
it was the first time i’d ever been there and fourfiveseconds came on so obviously i had to go on stage and dance the night away.
we made some friends and headed to a&w to grab some food and that’s when the interesting part of the night started to unfold.
a homeless man came inside and the people we were with were kind of brushing him off, but i could see he was really distressed and confused so i took him outside and asked him what was wrong.
he told me he had to get to mcdonalds to get something to eat (apparently he didn’t want anything from a&w) and i told him it was kind of a ways away. we asked some guys where mcdonalds was and they confirmed what i said (a few blocks either way) and then the homeless man started to get worked up but i calmed him down before he got into a fight. he told me i was very kind and that he respected me and we also bonded over the fact that we were both from toronto.
he told me that his friend was at tim hortons, which was much closer, and i told him i would take him there and get him food if that was what he wanted.
on our way to tim hortons i asked him what his story was and he told me he had been in jail for 22 years and had just gotten out and that the world was all new and confusing and strange. i told him all he needed to do was adjust and that he would be fine. he asked me
“do you really think so?”
and i said yes and he hugged me.
we kept walking and i asked him what he had been in jail for and he told me he’d been put away for manslaughter. apparently he killed a man with his bare hands in a fight. he told me the man he killed had an aneurysm that he didn’t know about.
obviously this was a bit distressing, but he seemed alright and it seemed like i had the situation under control, which might have been a stupid thing to think, but whatever.
when we got to tim hortons i got him a coffee and a sandwich. he asked me why the signs behind the counter were changing so fast, and i told him that technology had changed but he’d get used to it.
when i took him to his friend’s table, some man apparently looked at him the wrong way and they started exchanging heated words.
the man kept saying things like “i bought my own coffee” and “you heard what i said” and my friend started raising his voice and then he took off his coat to get ready for a fight.
everyone was staring and the employees looked worried, but i got in between them and started saying things like “don’t follow these instincts” and “be better than this” and “it’s not worth it” and he said “all i know how to do is fight.”
the agitator went outside, leaving his laptop and his coat, and then my friend hugged me and said “i won’t touch him, for you.”
i made him pinky promise and he sat down to eat his sandwich. i asked him if he was okay and he said yes. i told him i had to go meet my friends and he hugged me again and told me he wouldn’t get into a fight tonight. he told me i was very sweet and that he respected me a lot, and then i went to meet up with all my friends.
the situation was incredibly strange and tense, but it reminded me of when i used to skip school in high school and talk to homeless people, just listening to them and to their stories.
it reminded me that the smallest amount of kindness can go such a long way, and i was happy to maybe help, even if only just a little bit.
sorry if this is so poorly written – i’m still kind of drunk.
all i know is that this thursday didn’t turn out the way i thought it would at all.

but its ‘just a film’ right?
Unfortunately those Muslims were murdered over parking. Not being Muslim.
Yes because that is a logical conclusion that ABSOLUTELY takes into account Yosur’s complaints to her father that this man that killed her had previously harassed her and her husband for being Muslim and takes into account the series of social media posts where he spewed hate to Muslims and self-proclaimed himself as someone who hated religion.
Please. There is no reason for you to be this much of a liar, there is no reason for you to be working THIS HARD to erase the cause for these heinous murders.
‘Don’t worry, it’s not islamophobia, just parking’
You and anyone else who could possibly go along with this absolute bullshit that not only contradicts the killer’s personal views but the victim’s own worries are enabling a system of violent, horrific islamophobia. You are complicit, your hatred makes you complicit.
i can’t believe people honestly believe they were killed over a parking dispute?? PARKING???
-
They are in all seriousness trying to say that the savage inhuman piece of garbage that killed the three Muslims in NC killed them over a parking dispute and not with hateful intentions despite the fact he’d said heinous things on Facebook about Islam and both Yosur and Razan wore headscarves and all 3 were prominent and outspoken Muslims in the community. I know I’ve said this hundreds of times since yesterday—but imagine the headlines were the roles reversed.
the media is actually fucked, but we all knew that.
