today my dad asked me how my extended essay was coming along. i told him it was going really well when really i haven’t even started. this got me thinking thinking about how much i lie during the course of a casual day and how i can continue to live guilt free. i often indulge in small falsehoods for many reasons, as most people do. we tell these tiny little lies and still like to think of ourselves as honest people. i have told friends that they look great when i think they look awful. i have made excuses for why i am fifteen minutes late. i have told my parents that my day was ‘fine’ when really it was heart-breakingly awful.
i exaggerate, i minimize, i deflect, dismiss and omit. there are many ways to lie and i think i’m guilty of all of them. sometimes it gets so bad that i start believing the lies i tell. i do it to spare the feelings of friends, to avoid confrontation, to make things move faster. heck, sometimes i lie just for the fun of it. they’re just so useful, so easy and so convenient; three qualities that society has come to adore.
i am guilty, you are guilty, we are all guilty. our pants are on fire and we love the burn. if you’re reading this and we’ve ever had a conversation, i’ve probably lied to you at some point.
try going one week without telling a single lie. see if you can do it. it means living with some serious consequences, but hey, at least you can tell people to stop lying without being a total hypocrite.
in other news, i get annoyed at the sound of my own voice.
also, this entire post was another successful attempt at avoiding the monster that is the extended essay.
