dirty little whirlwind, i'm pinned to the heart of your swirl.

DISCLAIMER: this is a personal blog (i just want to write about my life 😭) and does not necessarily reflect the views, opinions or perspectives of my employer or church.

the heat of it.

“another glass of wine, please.”

work, play, work, play, work work work.

it’s the same on the face of it, yet somehow this summer seems different. there’s something in the air that seeps into my pores when i walk down the city streets. there seems to be more promise in it. and i feel stronger – more able and ready to take charge and make this summer whatever i want to make it.

the air itself is changing. the heat is coming on, and with it a slew of drinks – beers by the poolside, discussions over a couple of casual martinis, and of course, all of the hard liquors we save for the night – to chug on some occasions and mix on others and often do both because really we’re too young to give a damn.

“never go to a bar sober.”

we need the haze to make it bearable – we need the slur in our words and the sway in our step and the arms intertwined or slung over shoulders.

and now summer has arrived and tipsy footsteps aren’t only for when the moon is there to greet us and the stars come out to shine – but really, when do stars shine here anyway?

here we have all the big city lights to make up for it.

i still have a full bottle of chardonnay stored in my fridge. i’m supposed to go to the beach tomorrow and i guess i’ll take it with me along with couple of wine glasses. that way, annie and i can have a truly relaxing afternoon of tanning by the water.

in other news, my family went on a picnic for mother’s day at riverdale farm – a staple of our collective childhood.

from time to time i find myself awash with an overwhelming love for my family, and i remember how lucky i am to be so dearly loved. my parents would do anything for us, and my siblings – well, we protect each other.

i think that’s why i rarely ever feel truly lonely. i know that when all else fades away, they will be there standing behind me, arms wide open to catch me if and when i fall.

and they will pat my back and console me with words of comfort until i’m strong enough to stand on my own again.

i can never hit the ground.

we sat on a hill because my family doesn’t really think things through sometimes, and eating was difficult but amusing. and then we went to see the animals and i tried to make spirit connections with all of them (the cow was a brilliant success – the goats, however, were rather rude).

all of the tiny children got in the way of my bonding and i resented them for it.

i wonder when it was that i grew up enough to realize that i don’t have to chase a chicken every time i see one.

that was mother’s day.

coco texted me on monday and we went to gabby’s for some afternoon drinks and a plate of nachos. we caught up on each other’s lives and eventually got to talking about jobs. she told me she was looking for people to work as servers at one of the places she works at and now she’s gotten me a second job.

my training starts on sunday and i’m actually quite excited.

i’ve always wanted to try my hand at being a waiter. i have this romanticized vision of the charming waiter life, in which i walk around with a tray piled with perfectly balanced food and sing to customers who tip me generously. sometimes spills happen but we all laugh it off and all is quickly forgiven with not a single reprimanding word.

and then one day i am helping a table and lock eyes with a rich and handsome patron. we are immediately enamoured and he whisks me away to elope in, i don’t know, british columbia the following week. we spend the rest of our lives traveling the world and when we get tired, we retreat to a cabin in the woods. he hunts and cooks and cleans and i am free to write magnificent stories that i share with world and am loved for.

i thought about all this and took another sip of my martini.

hello, summer 2012.
