ilesoniq 2014.

i went to montreal to visit chris this weekend and he got me a ticket to ilesoniq and it was sweaty and loud and fun!
i got there on thursday night and we ordered boustan and watched some tv before snuggling and going to bed.
we woke up pretty early on friday and did some studying at starbucks (well, i read gone girl while he studied) before getting ready and going to ilesoniq.
the security looked pretty intense (and really thorough), which scared me because i was sneaking in some illicit contraband, but everything worked out fine and i quickly transitioned from nervous to excited.
we watched iggy azalea, who was great even though the crowd wasn’t that thick yet, and spent the rest of the day going from stage to stage (the small stage featuring the up and coming artists was SO. FUN), making friends and being told how cute we were.
we danced through adventure club and finished at tiesto and everything was bright lights and pumping blood and fireworks and music.
then we went home and took a nap before going out with ally & co.
she took us to this grungy spot in the middle of an anarchist commune or something and it turned out to be pretty fun.
it was essentially a room with a bunch of people dancing, music playing and visuals projected onto a wall.
it was super hip.
it was nice to go out with chris’s friends again. they’re all sweethearts who know how to party, so we were all out until about 7am.
the sun rose and the trains ran and we headed home to nap before going out again.
we headed back to ilesoniq at about 6:30pm on friday, which was just about perfect, and we danced and danced and danced.
it rained and it was a bit chilly but we’d brought hoodies and danced through it – through cosmic gate and kill the noise, through zed’s dead, infected mushroom and laidback luke – so we were okay.
we also made a friend named adam, who tagged along with us for most of the day and was really sweet, even when i dismissed him.
and then we went to ally’s house for a little break before heading to belmont for the cheaper ilesoniq afterparty.
we danced a little more there, but chris doesn’t really like dubstep so we mostly just soaked in the atmosphere before heading home.
we spent the next day laying in bed until about 9 pm and then we had a date night at juliette et chocolat before studying at a second cup (he studied, i read gone girl) until about 3 am.
and then we went home, had some really great fun, watched the mindy project and went to bed.
i was on a bus on my way home a few hours later, and even though the bus ride and lack of nutrients or hydration left me nauseous for most of today, it was worth it.
all in all, it was a really really cute and fun weekend and my booboo is the best!

CultureHISTORY: The Ferguson Protests – #NMOS14
In light of Mike Brown’s murder, and the police occupation of Ferguson, something extraordinary is happening. With the help of #BlackTwitter, social media, the spotlight of national attention and the impassioned citizens of Ferguson, a protest movement is taking shape and it is important to bear witness.
First there was the #IfTheyGunnedMeDown thread which was reported in the NY Times & LA Times, the #DontShoot thread of photos (some above), and tomorrow a National Moment of Silence across the country for the victims of police brutality.
Thursday, August 14th – #NMOS14 – 4:00P (PT) / 6:00P (CT) / 7:00P (ET). Check cities/location here.
The issue of police brutality against communities of color is a decades-old problem. But with new technology, everyone has access to more information and these cases are getting more attention. Plus, in the last four weeks, four unarmed black men have been killed by policemen across the country. Along with Mike Brown in St. Louis, Eric Garner in New York, John Crawford in Dayton, OH and Ezell Ford in L.A. Yes, it’s time for a movement.

“"When an orphan is depressed,” wrote Wilbur Larch, “he is attracted to telling lies. A lie is at least a vigorous enterprise, it keeps you on your toes by making you suddenly reponsible for what happens because of it. You must be alert to lie, and stay alert to keep your lie a secret. Orphans are not the masters of their fates; they are the last to believe you if you tell them that other people are also not in charge of theirs.
"When you lie, it makes you feel in charge of your life. Telling lies is very seductive to orphans. I know,” Dr. Larch wrote. “I know because I tell them, too. I love to lie. When you lie, you feel as if you have cheated fate – your own, and everybody else’s.”“

my family went to the african lion safari today and it was really cute.
but also really hot and really sweaty and all of us basically died from lack of oxygen and heat stroke because our van doesn’t have airconditioning and people kept yelling at us to keep our windows closed even though that was practically a hazard considering the circumstances and the drive through the safari was so so so so long.
but we saw so many funny animals!
and we touched some too!
we fed some of the animals and i’ve got to say i admire the camel’s gusto even though it was pretty selfish. he was a real go-getter with his eyes on the prize.
then i went to cozette’s birthday party at her house and it was also cute.
i got to meet some of her friends and her family and there was pleasant conversation and wine and her backyard was beautiful and everyone was really nice.
all in all it was a really cute day.

i pre’d with the aberkidz last night with the intention of going out to tequila jacks with them, but reina and i somehow ended up at sadiq’s apartment with elaha and we all hung out and drank wine(?) before going to frans.
we bumped into cam (who had been at crews) on the street, and he said he was tired of being objectified so he came with us.
while we were eating, some guy at the table across from us bet his friend he could throw a piece of food into cam’s shirt.
he didn’t make it, but their whole table thought he did, so he “won” $50 and gave cam $20 for being a good sport.
frans is a land of magic and mystery.

osheaga 2014.

i went to osheaga with chris and a few friends this past weekend and even though emotions were high and tensions flared, it was a really beautiful time and everyone had fun.
nellie and i drove to montreal on thursday and it was an incredibly smooth ride. i went to booboo’s apartment and took a nap while he wrote a midterm, and then we went to laura’s to hang out before heading to bed.
it was so nice to see chris for the first time in so long, especially after the rough patch we’d been through. everything was really confusing and uncertain – and so kind of scary – but as soon as i saw him i was sure of how i felt.
it was like the first taste of water after a drought, and i was happy beyond both apprehension and comprehension.
sadiq and bre (and ashley and beril) arrived in the early morning the next day – they’d driven through the night. i handed bre the key to laura’s apartment and they went on their way to take naps and rest up for the big day.
eventually we were all at osheaga, and we were all having fun together for a while, but partway through the day, chris and i left everyone and had an adventure necessarily on our own.
we sat in a forest and everything was disorienting and layered and connected – and so, so complicated, and so, so heavy – and we wanted to be together but it was hard but it didn’t have to be and the first step to healing was acknowledging the negative feedback cycle we’d been caught in – the way we warped things to be sad and insecure – the way i was afraid and the way i pushed him away and the way that hurt me more and made me more afraid – the tightness and the pain – and we loved each other and we made each other happy and maybe that was all that mattered in the end – that he was there, that i was there, that we were there – that i love and am loved and i know and trust the truth of this –
and somehow we ended up at flume, which is where we wanted to be all along, and everything started coming together and we sat in the middle of the universe and watched a perfect sunset and i saw the golden haze and it was beautiful.
by the end of the day, we were so tired that we didn’t even go out that night.
the next day we had breakfast with bre and then chris stayed home while we went to osheaga.
i spent most of the day with bre and her crew and it was really fun. i know i say this all the time, but i love listening to live music – i love the energy of the performance and the electricity of the crowd and the way everything feeds off of everything else.
i saw sadiq for a little bit and ended the day watching jack white with nellie, which was really nice.
that night, chris, me, bre, beril and simone all went to blizzarts. some guy called me a faggot and told me i walked like a bitch and he was really big so we couldn’t pick a fight. it was both scary and infuriating, but the guy in line told me not to give a shit.
“don’t worry about it – that jackass probably just didn’t sell enough coke and has a fucking shitty life.”
but still, it was kind of a downer.
i danced through it, so it was okay.
chris had only gotten a ticket for friday, but his determination and courage were enough for him to sneak in on sunday. apparently he stalked the perimeters for an hour, climbed a fence and dodged security or something and it was all very impressive and incredibly romantic.
the highlight of the day was definitely seeing lorde with booboo (and friends). pure heroine was the first album we notably made out to. we played it way back when in my apartment right before he had to leave and it was all at once very passionate and sweet.
watching lorde perform was kind of cathartic, and it felt like everything was coming full circle – like it was all coming together and it was all going to be okay – and that’s a nice feeling.
chris and i went to the chvrches dj set at the corona theater that night and it was very reminiscent of the time we saw kaskade and we danced and it was fun and so many people came up to me to tell me how cute we were, which was very nice, but also kind of invasive.
we had a really good time, and the next day i was in a car with nellie, bre and beril on our way back home.
we stopped for harvey’s in brockville and everyone looked relatively boring and the same and it was really eerie.
and then we were home, with all these new memories of the crowds and the music and the glorious golden haze.
