Unfriendly reminder that in America it’s reasonable to say an unarmed black kid deserved to be shot six times because he might have robbed a convenience store, but a white kid shouldn’t be kicked off the high school football team just because he violently raped a girl.

today was carol’s last day at work so we had a little goodbye party (ice cream, cookie cake, ice cream cake) and then mike attacked her (with cake).
-

my family did one of those escape the room challenges and we failed because some of the clues were misleading and we were being dumb.
but at least it was fun and we got to snap this super cute photo!!

luke came to visit this weekend and it was super cute and mostly wholesome.
he arrived on friday night and we went out and partied with the aberkids for kelly and stephanie’s birthday at cube.
i managed to sneak into a booth and procure a decent amount of champagne and alcohol before a couple of the guys realized i wasn’t a part of their group. the ladies i was chatting with didn’t seemed to mind having me around though, but oh well.
then we went home and watched an episode of the mindy project (“i don’t want to,” “but she’s so relatable!”) before going to sleep.
the next day we helped paint yodit’s room and it was all very cute. we had wine and pizza and we hid from her vicious, elaha-eating dog. i was basically useless, but all in all i think we did a pretty good job. yodit’s mom seemed to be impressed.
then we went home and watched “man on wire”, an episode of “the leftovers” and “godzilla” before going to bed.
we were supposed to go to church the next day (luke got dressed up and it was so cute), but we were running late and we weren’t going to make it in time so we just stayed home, took some fun stuff and painted for a bit.
he painted a picture called “hot dogs or legs” and i painted one called “portrait of a girl by metric.” mine had a face in it and his didn’t.
then elaha came over and we walked around and stumbled into an art exhibit/market cooperative or something and it was really cool. we saw some art and heard someone singing solange and then headed to kensington market for pedestrian sunday.
turns out it wasn’t the last sunday of the month yet, but it was whatever – luke still liked it.
and then we went to harbourfront and boarded a ferry to the island. we walked around for a really long time trying to find a hedge maze (which i have subsequently discovered has been taken down) but gave up and decided to climb over a wall which we weren’t supposed to climb over to pretend to be mermaids on the rocks by the water.
we contemplated the powers of nature and the impotence of humanity in the face of far greater forces and it was chill.
then we went to the franklin garden and laid down in the treehouse and listened to music. it was very serene and beautiful and the sunlight filtered in in perfect ways and everything was good.
and then we went home, where i discovered i had a stupid tan because i’d worn a tanktop all day.
sadiq and i took luke to kinton that night and i made him eat his entire bowl of ramen so we could get a photo.
the next day we went to the beach with elaha, and i was happy because that gave me a chance to even out my tan. we brought beer and laid out in the sun next to a group of 16-year-old hooligans who were waving mickey’s around and smoking cigarettes and joints – and i just kept hoping i didn’t look so ridiculously precocious in the worst ways when i was their age.
then we went home and luke fell asleep watching “x men days of future past.”
he left this morning, and i guess i’ll miss him for a week before i see him again in montreal.
i’m so excited for school to start, and i’m basically missing frosh so i won’t even have to encounter all the drunk babies running around campus!
and i get to see my booboo in a few weeks!

i love this version of team, and it makes me think of the time my booboo snuck into osheaga to be with me, which makes me super duper happy!!

staying in.
elaha came over tonight and got me to leave my house with her even though i was tired and watching the mindy project.
we headed over to sadiq’s house and we got churros and a french fvanilla on the way. i think that might’ve been my first time eating a churro – something about deep fried dough covered in sugar just didn’t seem all that appealing to me, but it was amazing and i wanted six more it probably wasn’t very good for me (sugar on sugar on sugar), but i’ll just use that as motivation to go to my spin class tomorrow.
we arrived at sadiq’s apartment with no further plans and we ended up spending about an hour or so just talking and watching/singing along to music videos, working our way from pretty new (anaconda, black widow, shake it off) to fairly old (pretty girl rock, unfaithful, party in the usa).
it was really fun.
we realized we hadn’t spent that much quality time together recently, and it was nice to just be with each other and sing and dance on a bed and have that be more than enough.
it’s important to remember that friendships need constant nurturing, and spending intimate time together when you can – just being together, laughing together, butchering lyrics together – can go a long, long way to making hearts soar.
i love my friends.
and speaking of friends, luke arrives in toronto tomorrow!!

We assume others show love the same way we do — and if they don’t, we worry it’s not there.

bre’s disposable camera photos from osheaga are so cute.

not mirrors.
i’ve been thinking a lot about why people dislike other people – why i sometimes dislike other people, right off the bat, without even bothering to get to know them – with all of my self-righteous judgments and haughty dismissals – setting people aside because they’re just not my cup of tea.
when i sit down and think about it, i find that a lot of the time i dislike people because i see them as manifestations or reflections of insecurities i have about myself, which means it doesn’t really have anything to do with them at all. even so, in my head, they are people i don’t want to associate with.
the negativity stems from me.
i try to remember people aren’t just reflections of the good and bad things i see in myself – the good to be welcomed, the bad to be avoided. they are people in and of themselves, with their own struggles and hardships, and we are all just trying to make it in the world. we are all people just looking to be liked – to be loved.
the world needs a little more love.
so when i catch myself disliking someone for no reason – someone who’s never wronged me – i try to check myself and push all of these negative things aside to make room for something that could be beautiful – a conversation, a friendship.
i know a lot of people, and in my experience the ones who are the most genuinely confident, fearless and secure are the ones who are also the least judgmental – the ones who are open to everyone, willing to give everyone a chance – the ones who don’t see themselves as better than anyone else – the ones who don’t cast others aside.
being nice and treating others well takes a certain confidence and strength, especially when it doesn’t feel easy.
the people i admire most are the ones who show kindness when it is least expected.

my mom found a bunch of acrylic paints in my sister’s old room so i got my brother to grid a photo of me and my booboo and then massacred our faces at 3 am!!
i wish i had the patience to actually paint something well.

“And then I can’t help myself, even though it’s none of my business, even though Nick would be furious if he knew: I cross over to the trash can and pull out the receipts, so I can picture where he’s been all night. Two bars, two strip clubs. And I can see him in each one, talking about me with his friends, because he must have already talked about me for all that petty, smeared meanness to come out so easily. I picture them at one of the pricier strip clubs, the posh ones that make men believe they are still designed to rule, that women are meant to serve them, the deliberately bad acoustics and thwumping music so no one has to talk, a stretch-titted woman straddling my husband (who swears it’s all in fun), her hair trailing down her back, her lips wet with gloss, but I’m not supposed to be threatened, no it’s just boyish hijinks, I am supposed to laugh about it, I am supposed to be a good sport.
Then I unroll the crumpled piece of notebook paper and see a girl’s handwriting – Hannah – and a phone number. I wish it were like the movies, the name something silly, CanDee or Bambie, something you could roll your eyes at. Misti with two hearts over the I’s. But it’s Hannah, which is a real woman, presumably like me. Nick has never cheated on me, he has sworn it, but I also know he has ample opportunity. I could ask him about Hannah, and he’d say, I have no idea why she gave me her number, but I didn’t want to be rude, so I took it. Which may be true. Or not. He could cheat on me and he would never tell me, and he would think less and less of me for not figuring it out. He would see me across the breakfast table, innocently slurping cereal, and know that I am a fool, and how can anyone respect a fool?”
