when it rains.
elaha and i spontaneously picked up a job handing out pamphlets advertising greenspace events happening during pride weekend.
we started at church st and made our way over to dundas square.
our catchphrase was “would you like a pamphlet?” which i guess wasn’t really selling it at all, but who ever stops for more than about a second from point a to point b?
it started raining while we were at dundas, but we stuck it out outside for a bit, singing and performing pamphlet acrobatics while attempting to do our job.
then we went into the mall and started hiding pamphlets around random stores and news stands.
it poured on our way back to 519 church (our starting point) and i’m not sure if all of it was worth the $60 we’d each be earning, but oh well.
we were soaked by the time we got home and elaha was not happy.
she stripped down and took a nap and she was still asleep by the time my booboo came over.
which brings me to my next point of interest:
booboo is in the city!!
-
booboo is coming to town tomorrow HURRAAAAAAAAAY!!

yeah seriously tell us how wizardry’s done in the new world tell me how the wizards from france and spain and britain stamped out the brujos and the medicine men and set up their own schools tell me what the fuck the british raj did to fucking india because…
at first i thought this was melodramatic but it makes an interesting point and opens up the possibility for so many stories and so much depth.

bre and i spent the afternoon at the beach today.
it was the first time i’d seen her in about three weeks because she always has work and we’ve stopped inviting her to things (lol) so we had a lot of catching up to do.
we laid in the sun, played music and had lyfchatz and it was really nice.
i want a bangin tan for the summer.
then we went to starbucks to grab some ice coffee, but bre realized she’d lost her wallet.
she had a panic attack and ran back to the beach while i told her i’d catch up with her later and ordered my ice coffee (i was already so far in the line).
she couldn’t find it at the beach, and we checked back at ali baba’s (where we’d gotten shwarmas) to see if they’d found anything (the employees got mad at us for asking so many times). then we theorized that the customer behind us in line when we were paying for our shwarmas might’ve stolen it (“maybe he’ll mail it to you?”) and then i suggested she might’ve just dropped it at starbucks.
turns out she never brought her wallet in the first place – it was at home!
it was all very stressful and hilarious.

talk therapy.
i had a talk with booboo today and it was so nice and so relieving and now i don’t feel anxious at all.
sometimes shit might seem petty and unreasonable, but i really think that if something is making you feel bad, you have to bring it up and clear the air. keeping it all in just allows it to accumulate and become so toxic that it swiftly and irrevocably destroys.
talking may seem daunting, but it’s always better than harbouring so much resentment, anxiety and insecurity that you burst and lose something worth saving. in the long run, the simple act of talking – communicating – might just save something beautiful.
it’s so nice to be with someone i actually want to be with and who wants to be with me.
he’s coming to visit soon and i’m excited!!

some tips!

today elaha, sadiq and i walked through the u of t campus and then went to kensington market to buy sunglasses. then we went to h&m to do some shopping (sadiq has an employee discount and i needed a belt) before going to sushi extra for some grub.
we’d done a lot of walking so we went back to my place where elaha and sadiq could rest while i talked to chris, who i miss dearly. elaha went home around 11 while sadiq and i met up with yodit and camille.
the four of us went to futures for coffee and realtalk.
it seems that relationship tensions are flowing through the air.
throughout the day i’d talked with my friends about love and intimacy and about trust and relationships – open, closed or otherwise.
i did a lot of thinking and a lot of what was brought up made me sad.
i’ve been feeling really anxious lately and i think that talking to my good friends – voicing all my concerns and insecurities – really helped me formulate an idea as to why.
relationships and feelings are so hard and so complicated.
how does anybody ever know what to do?

strong roots.

my family had a bbq for father’s day today and it was really special. my dad started telling stories about his childhood and everyone was listening intently and laughing often. he’s a gifted storyteller – he becomes incredibly animated and charismatic and he radiates this amazing, magnetic energy.
he told us some stories we used to hear as children, and he told us some new ones too. a lot of the stories had to do with his humble beginnings – his impoverished childhood, his quests to steal fruit and harvest other people’s crops for something to eat – his adventures climbing trees, riding caribou and fighting tides to keep alive.
and all the while my mother listened, and sometimes she looked happy and sometimes she looked sad – but she always looked like she was remembering things too – remembering a part of their lives so long before having us children.
and i thought about how easy it is to think of my parents as just parents – as figures of love and authority living only to provide – and how easy it is to forget that they had whole, beautiful lives full of hope and heartache, with their own dreams and aspirations, their own trials and triumphs, feeling everything capable of being felt in the broad spectrum of human emotion.
they had whole histories i will never know. and i thought about how amazing they are, and about their achievements and their sacrifice – and i had a kind of epiphany.
some people wonder why i am so confident – they wonder how i can be so sure of myself. but i take one look at my family – at my parents and all of their children – and the answer is strikingly clear.
i look at my parents and i have so much faith in them that it spills over into me. i honestly don’t believe i can go wrong when i am the product of two of the best people i know in this whole entire world.
their blood flows through my veins and this makes me strong. i have grown from formidable roots and i am grateful for them.
and if you feel the same about your own parents, consider yourself blessed.

we went to little italy on saturday to watch the italy vs england game and i couldn’t really follow the game too well but it was lots of fun!
it was super crowded, the streets were blocked off and there were carnival games and rides and we just waded through the masses of people and tried to keep a hold on each other.
at one point some guy blew a horn or something and elaha turned directly to him and said,
“can you shut up?”
and immediately ran away.
apparently she didn’t know he was right beside us.
“i’m not even a bitch!”
and then we went to sneaky dees for some beer and nachos.
i bumped into the most random assortment of friends on our way out.
there are so many people to bump into in the world.
